The Best Cocoa

Colombian cacao bearing the Alternative Development seal received the title in Paris that recognizes it as one of the 20 best in the world. Colombia has won this competition three times: in 2010 and 2011 with cacao from Arauca, and in 2015 with cacao from Tumaco. Paris, October 31, 2019.

Paris, October 31, 2019. During the 25th edition of the Cocoa Excellence Awards at the Salon du Chocolat in Paris, cocoa from Santander, grown in San Vicente de Chucurí, was awarded as one of the best cocoas in the world.

This recognition confirms the quality of the cocoa grown and processed in Colombian fields, and especially highlights the work of the peasant producers linked to UNODC's Alternative Development programs, who today are committed to a product that represents peace and hope for their communities.

Colombian Cocoa

Colombian cacao was declared by the ICCO2 as fine and aromatic. This category comprises only 5% of the world's traded cacao beans. Cacao quality is analyzed based on its physical3, chemical4, and organoleptic5 characteristics. This combination of factors gives Colombian cacao unique sensory experiences, with aromatic properties and chemical characteristics superior to those of ordinary or traditional cacao. Fine and aromatic cacao comes from crosses of Criollo and Trinitario clones. In Colombia, over the last 10 years, planting with regional or Trinitario clones has been implemented, guaranteeing that 100% of production is fine and aromatic. Additionally, Colombian cacao received recognition at the second edition of the international cacao awards at the Salon du Chocolat in Paris, an award given for its sweet flavor.
